Carmen Maret is a flutist, composer, educator, and entrepreneur from Grand Rapids,
Michigan known for her work with the Folias Duo.
Maret's 14 year collaboration with Folias, a duo co-led with her husband, guitarist,
Andrew Bergeron demonstrates Maret's flexibility and expertise in classical, world
and improvised music. She has performed with Folias on stages around the globe including
in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, and Chile; and her
contribution as both a composer and performer has also produced 5 CDs of original
music and arrangements for flute and guitar. Maria Nockin in American Record guide
writes, "Maret's compositions are all interesting pieces that can certainly be enjoyed
by almost any listener who likes either classical or Latin American music."
In the tango world, Maret specializes in adapting Golden Era Tango orchestra arrangements
for flute and guitar. As both an Argentine tango dancer and musician she has also
performed at milongas in over 40 tango communities throughout the United States and
South America and leads musicality workshops that help to bridge communication and
camaraderie between musicians and dancers.
Since 2005, Maret has co-operated the Folias Music website where she and Andrew Bergeron
self-publish their sheet music and recordings, host a podcast called Folias Music
Live and write for a blog that documents their relentless exploration of food and
nature throughout the world.
Maret maintains an active teaching career serving as an instructor of flute, music
theory, music history, popular music, and music business at two west Michigan colleges:
Aquinas College, and Grand Rapids Community College.
